Signs Your Car A/C Needs Attention
- A/C blowing warm or hot air
- A/C not getting as cold as before
- Cooling works only while driving
- A/C cools intermittently
- A/C compressor not engaging
- Unusual noises when A/C is on
- Weak airflow from the vents
- Bad odor from the vents
- Visible refrigerant or oil residue
- A/C stops cooling in hot weather
These symptoms can have several different causes. Testing is required before determining which component or service is needed.
A/C Diagnosis Before Parts Replacement
A vehicle's air-conditioning system includes multiple mechanical, electrical and control components. An A/C concern may involve:
- Low refrigerant
- Refrigerant leak
- Compressor issue
- Pressure sensor or switch
- Electrical problem
- Cooling fan issue
- Condenser problem
- Expansion valve or orifice tube
- Evaporator concern
- Blend-door or HVAC control issue
- Blower motor problem
The exact diagnostic process depends on the vehicle and symptoms. Possible diagnostic steps may include:
- Checking system operation
- Measuring A/C pressures
- Checking vent temperature
- Scanning HVAC or powertrain systems when applicable
- Checking compressor command and operation
- Inspecting for visible leaks
- Checking cooling fan operation
- Electrical testing where appropriate
Does My A/C Need a Recharge or a Repair?
Refrigerant does not normally get “used up” like gasoline. If an A/C system becomes significantly low on refrigerant, there may be a leak or another problem that should be investigated.
Some vehicles may require refrigerant service as part of a repair or maintenance procedure, but simply adding refrigerant without understanding why the system is low may not solve the underlying problem. At Proline Auto Repair, the goal is to determine what the system actually needs.
R-134a & R-1234yf A/C Service
Vehicles use different refrigerants depending on model year and manufacturer. Many older vehicles use R-134a; many newer vehicles use R-1234yf. The correct refrigerant must be used for the specific vehicle and A/C system, and refrigerants should never be mixed.

What Repairs Qualify?
The Cool Air Rebate Program currently applies specifically to qualifying automotive A/C systems that are leaking R-134a refrigerant. Important eligibility rules:
- The customer must first be approved by the Cool Air Rebate Program.
- The customer must receive program eligibility/authorization before covered work is performed.
- The vehicle's A/C system must use R-134a refrigerant.
- The A/C system must have an R-134a refrigerant leak.
- A non-working A/C system without a qualifying refrigerant leak is not eligible under this program.
- R-1234yf systems are currently not eligible for this rebate.
- The customer must approve the eligible repair.
- Program benefits are subject to current program rules and availability of funds.
Not every A/C repair qualifies. Eligible customers may receive assistance covering 90% of qualifying repairs, up to the program maximum.
What About the Diagnostic Fee?
If the diagnosis confirms a qualifying R-134a leak, the repair qualifies under program rules, and the customer approves the eligible repair, the Cool Air Rebate Program currently pays 100% of the eligible diagnostic fee.
If the repair does not qualify under program rules, or the customer chooses not to proceed with the qualifying repair, the program currently pays 90% of the eligible diagnostic fee and the customer is responsible for the remaining 10%.
How the Cool Air Rebate Process Works
Check Eligibility
Apply or pre-qualify through the official Cool Air Rebate Program.
Receive Program Approval
You must receive approval — your eligibility letter — before covered diagnostic or repair work is performed. Work performed before program approval may not qualify for reimbursement.
Bring Your Vehicle to Proline
As an approved participating shop, Proline Auto Repair can diagnose the A/C concern and determine whether the vehicle has a qualifying R-134a refrigerant leak.
Approve the Repair
If the repair qualifies and you approve it, Proline performs the eligible repair and handles the applicable program billing according to Cool Air Rebate requirements.
Does My Vehicle Qualify?
Cool Air Rebate currently applies only to qualifying A/C systems using R-134a refrigerant. Vehicles using R-1234yf are not currently eligible for the rebate.
However, Proline Auto Repair can still provide regular diagnostic and A/C service for R-1234yf vehicles outside of the rebate program.
Not sure which refrigerant your vehicle uses? Call Proline at (760) 977-0414 with your year, make and model.
Cool Air Rebate eligibility and benefits are determined by the Cool Air Rebate Program, not by Proline Auto Repair. Program requirements, reimbursement amounts and funding availability are subject to change. Customers must receive program approval before covered services are performed. Final eligibility is subject to official Cool Air Rebate Program rules. This is a third-party assistance program for eligible California consumers — not a Proline Auto Repair discount.
A/C Refrigerant Leak Detection
Refrigerant leaks can occur at many locations, including:
- Hoses
- Connections
- O-rings
- Condenser
- Compressor seals
- Service fittings
- Evaporator
- Other A/C components
Depending on the vehicle and symptoms, leak detection may involve visual inspection, electronic leak detection, UV dye or other appropriate methods. Some leaks, such as evaporator or intermittent leaks, may take more time to locate.
A/C Compressor Diagnosis & Replacement
The A/C compressor circulates refrigerant through the system. Compressor-related symptoms may include:
- A/C not cooling
- Compressor not engaging
- Abnormal compressor noise
- Incorrect system pressures
- System contamination after compressor failure
A compressor that does not engage can have several possible causes, including refrigerant-pressure conditions, electrical issues, sensors, relays, control commands or compressor failure. Proper diagnosis should come first.

A/C Electrical Components
Testing relays, fuses, wiring and control signals for the A/C system.
Some components can be repaired; others must be replaced.
A/C Cold but Airflow Is Weak?
Poor airflow is different from a refrigerant problem. Possible causes include:
- Cabin air filter restriction
- Blower motor issue
- Blower resistor or module problem
- Air-door or actuator problem
- HVAC control problem
- Other airflow restrictions
This is why diagnosis matters before performing an A/C recharge.
Why Does My A/C Get Warm at Idle?
If the A/C cools better while driving than while stopped, possible causes can include condenser airflow issues, cooling fan problems, refrigerant charge conditions or other A/C system problems. An inspection is needed to identify the actual cause.
What Happens During an A/C Appointment?
Tell Us What's Happening
We'll ask about the symptoms, when the problem occurs and whether the A/C works intermittently.
We Test the System
Testing is based on the specific vehicle and complaint.
We Explain the Findings
We'll explain what we found and what repair or service is recommended.
You Approve the Work

Don't Guess. Diagnose the A/C Problem.
If an A/C system isn't cooling properly, automatically adding refrigerant isn't always the correct answer. Too little refrigerant, too much refrigerant, airflow problems, electrical faults and component failures can all affect A/C performance. The correct repair starts with understanding what the system is doing.

Car A/C FAQs
Why is my car A/C blowing hot air?
Possible causes include low refrigerant, a leak, compressor or control problems, airflow issues, electrical faults or other A/C system problems. Testing is needed to find the actual cause.
Does my car just need an A/C recharge?
Not necessarily. Refrigerant does not normally get used up, so a system that is low may have a leak. Proper testing is recommended before automatically adding refrigerant.
How do I know if my A/C system has a leak?
A gradual loss of cooling can be a sign, but leak testing is required to identify the actual source. Some leaks, such as evaporator or intermittent leaks, can take more time to locate.
What is the difference between R-134a and R-1234yf?
They are different automotive refrigerants used in different vehicle applications. Many older vehicles use R-134a and many newer vehicles use R-1234yf. The correct refrigerant must be used, and refrigerants should never be mixed.
Can you service R-1234yf vehicles?
Yes. Proline Auto Repair can service vehicles equipped with R-1234yf air-conditioning systems.
Can you service R-134a vehicles?
Yes. Proline also services many vehicles equipped with R-134a systems.
Why does my A/C work while driving but get warm at a stop?
Condenser airflow, cooling fan problems, refrigerant charge conditions or other system concerns can cause this symptom. Diagnosis is recommended.
Why isn't my A/C compressor turning on?
Compressor operation depends on system pressures, electrical commands, sensors, relays and other conditions. The compressor itself is only one possible cause.
How long does A/C service take?
Time varies depending on the vehicle, the diagnostic process and the repair required. Contact us with your vehicle information for a more useful estimate.
How much does car A/C repair cost?
Cost depends on whether the vehicle needs refrigerant service, leak repair, electrical repair, or a compressor, condenser, evaporator or other component. We recommend diagnosis first, and we provide an estimate before additional work.
